World Tuberculosis Day
● Every year on March 24, 'World Tuberculosis Day' is organized all over the world.
● The purpose of celebrating World Tuberculosis Day is to increase efforts to end this global pandemic and to spread public awareness about the health, social and economic consequences of tuberculosis (TB).
● This day was chosen to observe World Tuberculosis Day because Dr. Robert Koch had discovered TB bacteria on this day i.e. March 24 in 1882, which causes TB.
● The theme of the day for the year 2023 is “Yes! We can end TB!”.
● Tuberculosis (TB) is a communicable (infectious) disease caused by bacteria (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) that affects the lungs but can also affect other parts (extra pulmonary TB/extra pulmonary tuberculosis).
● TB disease spreads from person to person through the air. When a person with 'pulmonary TB' coughs, sneezes or spits, he spreads TB germs into the air.
● In this disease, symptoms of, chest pain, weakness, loss of weight and fever can be seen with the patient's mucus and cough with blood.
● Tuberculosis is treatable and preventable.
● India has given high priority to eradicate TB from all over India before 2025, which is 5 years ahead of the 'Sustainable Development Goal' (SDG), 2030.
● Recently, on September 9, 2022, the ‘Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan’ was launched by the President.
