National Science Day
● Every year on 28 February 'National Science Day' is celebrated to commemorate the discovery of 'Raman Effect'.
● The Government of India designated 28 February as the National Science Day (NSD) in the year 1986.
● On this day Sir C.V. Raman announced the discovery of the 'Raman Effect', for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize in the year 1930. On this occasion theme based science communication activities are organized across the country.
● The purpose of celebrating this day is to enhance scientific thinking, popularize science and encourage innovative activities by promoting scientific attitude among people and create a positive scientific research culture.
● The theme for the year 2023 is- 'Global science for global wellbeing.
● This theme is in perfect sync with India taking over the presidency of the G-20 to become the voice of the developing countries of the Global south i.e. Asia, Africa and South America.
● The nodal agency supporting the National Science Day is the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
