The hilum of the kidney is the entrance into the kidney where the renal artery enters and the renal vein and ureter exit. The renal pelvis also narrows at the hilum to form the ureter. The hilum is located on the medial border of the kidney and is the site of the renal vessels and nerves entering the kidney, as well as the site of the exit of the ureter from the kidney. The hilum is covered by a fibrous capsule that encases the entire kidney.
