Somatostatin is a hormone that is also known as growth hormone inhibiting hormone. It is produced in the hypothalamus and released into the bloodstream to regulate the release of growth hormone (GH) from the anterior pituitary gland. Somatostatin works by inhibiting the release of GH-releasing hormone (GHRH) and thus, suppresses the secretion of GH. It consists of two peptides of 14 and 28 amino acids and is released from neurosecretory nerves.
